I finally got the 2nd edition of my book published (was supposed to happen last fall, turns out self-publishing was a lot more complicated than I thought it was going to be). A lot of you had asked if a print version of the first edition was available, so that was one of the main reasons I went with an actual publisher (BookBaby) for the second edition instead of just publishing it in e-book-only format like I did with the first one. It’s also available through a lot more distributors (“Can I get it from ___?” – odds are the answer is “yes” at this point).

Improvements in the 2nd Edition

Now available in print! It’s a 298 page paperback that retails for $16.99 (vs. $9.99 for the e-book).

Whole new chapter on lessons learned in Spain, including how to get an unlimited supply of language-exchanges with locals (the first two months I was there I averaged 2 language exchanges per day during the week).

Two new appendices (one on miscellaneous free online resources and one on recommended products) plus the others have all been significantly updated (especially the appendix listing free online lessons and courses).

The method itself has been slightly revised (nothing major but I’ve backed off a bit on how much I think you need to note for review, e.g. in Anki).

Cleaned up significantly (lots of typos fixed, reads easier). A few people complained about the overly casual, “blog-style” of writing, and I agreed: it needed to read like a book and I’ve edited it to that end.

New resources added, old links that stopped working removed, most resources now appear at the end of each chapter, making things a bit more readable and organized.

You can now (right now) get the e-book (I cover the print edition below) from:

The Print Edition – Please Help Me!

The print edition is currently in what’s known as “pre-order status”, and this is where you guys can not only really help me out but also ensure that you get a copy of the print edition as soon as possible. If you’re interested in a physical copy of the book (paperback, 298 pages), please place your order now.

The way this works when new print books come out is that booksellers (Amazon, B&N, etc.) have a pre-order period during which they determine how many copies they’re going to order based on the demand for the given title. They’ll bulk order (from the printer) more copies than they received orders for to ensure they have enough in stock to meet future demand, and they predict future demand based on current demand (right now that means pre-orders). So the more pre-orders they get, the more copies of my book they’ll order in bulk (e.g. if they get 300 orders for it they might order 400). Amazon is saying they’ll have it in stock by March 23rd, so you won’t have to wait long, and how many pre-orders I get over the next couple weeks is really important. Please help me by placing your order now! Here’s where you can do that:

Amazon.com

Barnes & Noble

If you’re someone who buys books wholesale (retailer, library, etc.) BookBaby tells me it’s also available through the following wholesale networks: “Baker & Taylor, Ingram, NACSCORP, Book-a-Zine, Partners, Diamond Comic, BPDI and many others.”

I’m not remotely close to wealthy, and this (writing about how to learn languages via my blogs and books) is what I do for a living. I desperately want to travel continuously for the next few years, all while learning new languages and helping you all learn those languages through my blog posts, books, e-mails, videos, tweets, facebook posts, and instagram videos. I can’t do this for free because that stuff takes time, time which if I’m not being paid for I can’t afford to spare because I’ll be too busy working “a real job” (this is a real job damnit, I work six days a week, take me seriously, grumble grumble).

I really believe in this method. I used it to learn Spanish which I then tested for 3 months in Spain, I’m currently using it to learn German (quick tip: Lola Rennt is a great movie to learn German from, so much fun), and I plan on using it to then learn French, Italian, Tagalog, Japanese, and who knows what else!

Thank You

All of you who read what I write, watch my videos, and especially who buy my book (including those who bought the 1st edition, of course): thank you. I genuinely wouldn’t be able to do this without you.

It’s also vital, for one to be able to continue in their chosen occupation, knowing that other people value what you’re doing–that really means a lot (I’d have long since quit if I thought I wasn’t helping anyone).

Cheers,

Andrew

P.S. If you do buy the book I would greatly appreciate any review you could leave for it (on whatever site you bought it from), books live and die by their reader reviews, you guys have enormous influence over whether someone else will buy the book.

P.P.S. Yes, I know the site is old (this theme is 7, 8 years old now?) and ugly as hell. I’m in the process of completely revamping it right now…along with the newsletter…while learning Spanish and German…and figuring out how/when I’m going to get to Colombia in a few months…and how to unload all my crap I don’t need before I leave and make some cash in the process (anybody wanna buy some weight plates or a cocktail shaker?).

I’ve been wanting to write about the culture in other countries for a while now but wanted to wait until I actually started traveling to do so. I’m in Spain at the moment and have had just a ton of observations and interesting little insights into Spanish culture, the psyche and habits of its people, and the country in general.

These sort of things aren’t strictly language-learning, hence I’ve held off writing about them on my current Spanish-learning blog, How to Learn Spanish. I know that although most people who are interested in learning a new language are also interested in the culture of those countries where that language is spoken, not all of them are, so I wanted to keep this separate.

I have finally got the new site started and published four new posts already (I wanted to have some material ready for you all before I sent you there):

Cultural Observation: Observations about the cultures of various countries and peoples.

Please check it out and tell me what you think!

I’ve already written about:

Initial Observations about the El Pilar Festival (Zaragoza, Spain)

Are the Spanish Lazy? I didn’t think so until I came here…

There Are No Bars, Restaurants, or Cafes in Spain (ok, a few restaurants)

Coffee in Spain

And there’s lots more to come, I’m brimming with ideas and topics I want to write about. I really hope to be able to get some actual interviews on video for you with local Spaniards here in Zaragoza – what do you want me to ask them? What do you want to know about Spain, its culture, life here, Spaniards, perhaps Zaragoza in particular?

This blog won’t just be about Spain or Spanish-speaking peoples, it will be about the culture, habits, and interesting little idiosyncrasies of people and countries everywhere! For example, gun culture in the United States (I’m from Texas, I was raised shooting guns and hunting, I can comment on this extensively), pub culture in the U.K., salsa and latin dance in South America, the concept of losing face in Asian cultures, how it’s taboo in Japan to walk and eat at the same time (seriously, it is), etc. Stuff like that is what I have in mind.

If that interests you, please have a look at my blog, bookmark and share it, subscribe to the RSS feed (or just wait for me to email you about the newsletter I’m setting up for it, I know not too many people use RSS anymore), etc.

I really look forward to this little project, this is a subject that fascinates me.

Oh, and yes! I will be traveling to many other countries in the future (and writing about them, of course). Right now I have my sights set on Colombia and then Germany. Regrettably I’ve hardly done any German since I arrived here in Spain, I’ve just been too busy, but I loathe the thought of losing the progress I’ve made and plan to pick it back up as soon as I can.

Let me know what you think (oh, and yes, I know I’m terrible about responding to emails in a timely fashion right now, forgive me, I will get around to replying and do read all of them no matter what).

Cheers,
Andrew

This has precisely nothing to do with learning Spanish, I just hadn’t posted in a while and felt bad (yes, I’ve got something I’m working on, should be up in a few days, I haven’t posted in a while because I’ve been busy with other business), and I was going through my analytics data and ended up looking at the various keywords that people used to get here when they come in via a search engine such as Google, and some of them are just really funny and it’s 3 AM and I’m bored so screw it why not–I hope you get some amusement out of these like I did:

what is the 10 words u need to know in spanish

I, too, wish someone would tell me what these 10 magical words are.

i give up at learning spanish

Well damn, I’m sorry. Keep trying?

a list of every single spanish word

I have spare time–I don’t, however, have that much spare time. Sorry.

Moving on!

not look like a gringo

Don’t wear shorts in Latin America, that will solve 95% of your gringo-ness problem right there.

video of someone saying teaching spanish

What?

Does “fluent” mean perfect?

No.

any advice if you want to learn but you can’t, you don’t have any motivation to learn

Then you’re screwed. Give up.

saint trump pido

What?

trilled r gringo

I can see how this led them here, but I’m still quite confused about what precisely it was they were looking for and what led them to come up with that particular search phrase in the first place.

como pasar a plural that is an interesting painting

WTF….What??!

teaching spanish going food shopping

I’m genuinely confused about what it is you want here.

should i study everyday all day

Yes…and all night…and while you’re on the toilet…and in the shower…and while having sex…upside down…like a bat….and don’t forget to record it and put it on YouTube for us.

what is the word spanish people always say like shit

I don’t know but I’d like to now: what is the word that Spanish people always say like shit? Anyone know? If you do, please indulge the rest of us and leave a comment.

Andrew the odd learn Spanish blog

Holy shit I’m famous!!! (ok, all of 1 person used that phrase, but still…I was excited)

cheesy spanish soap operas with preterite

Well, that’s…specific.

And…the very best for last…

i want to be fluent in spanish already damn it

Well you’ve come to the right place!!! Not only do we get fluent in Spanish here, but we curse, too, damnit!! 😀

Anytime I see a new word I don’t know, I have to look it up and add it to Anki. For me, looking up a single word in the dictionary can cause a chain reaction that leads to me looking up and adding ten more words. I do not know this word, “mancha”, what is this? I look it up. It means…”spot, blotch, stain, blemish, or liver spot”. This makes no sense: “Canal de la Mancha” = “Canal of the Spot”? “Canal of the stain”? “Canal of the liver spot”?!

Right, we’re going to sort this out, something funny’s going on here…

I initially think that maybe it refers to “spot” in the sense of a location, which actually is like the 8th definition down for the word “mancha” in my dictionary, so it’s possible, but…further googling turns up the Spanish wikipedia page for the English Channel, and within the very first paragraph I see:

El nombre no es más que una mala traducción del francés, ya que La Manche significa realmente ‘La Manga’, puesto que es la misma palabra que se emplea para designar a la parte de la camisa dentro de la cual se mete el brazo.

Which means:

The name is no more than a bad translation of the French, as La Manche actually means ‘The Sleeve’, since it’s the same word that’s used to designate which part of the shirt you put your arm into.

Ahhhh hahaha! I look up “manche” in the French dictionary, it means “sleeve”, I look up “manga” in the Spanish dictionary, it means “sleeve”. Ohhh boy. Ok, that explains it.

So what has happened here is that the Spanish heard the word “la manche” from the French when they were referring to the English Channel and then sort of simultaneously borrowed and mangled the French word for it instead of actually translating it (if they knew that it meant “the sleeve” they would’ve ended up with “la manga” in Spanish, but they didn’t know this), thereby ending up with “la mancha” as an adulteration of “la manche”. In other words, in the phrase “Canal de la Mancha”, the word mancha does not mean “spot, stain etc.”, in fact, it doesn’t mean anything, it’s just a name–sort of like if you’ve got a dog called “Spot”, in that particular context the word “spot” doesn’t mean “spot”, it doesn’t ‘mean’ anything, it’s just the name of the damned dog.

Yes, I was amused by this, thank you, I realize you may not be. Just remember, you can never get that 5 minutes of your life back it took you to read that. I hope that was interesting, let me know what you think in the comments (and would like me to write about in the future), also…

10. When the only reason you are learning a language is because you like its grammatical structure.

11. You watch a movie with subtitles in a language you don’t know, and never remember the plot because you weren’t paying attention to that, but you have, however, managed to deduce how the imperative mood functions in that language.

12. You know you’re a language nerd when your first thought after waking up in the morning is the realization that there is a common Greek root in the words “kleptomaniac” and “clepsydra”.

13. When you spend hours on Wikipedia trying to find the next language that you will learn based on number of speakers, difficulties in grammar, and the coolness of sounds from videos you find on YouTube. I absolutely do this, by the way, just the other night I spent easily an hour reading the wikipedia articles on Thai and Tagalog and then listening to some basic “how to speak thai/tagalog” videos on YouTube… If you, too, would like to waste the next two hours of your life in such a pursuit, I highly recommend you start here: List of languages by number of native speakers

14. When you read the warranty paper for the electronic device you just bought in all 7 languages that it’s printed in.

15. You use foreign grammar in your native language…and then make a “WTF did I just say?!” face 2 seconds later while everyone looks at you like you’re an alien.

16. When the first thing you think of when hearing “Panini” is Sanskrit, not sandwich.

17. When your parents get you language materials for your birthday for a new language and you have to tell them that you most unfortunately already speak that language.

18. When one of the first things that you do with a new computer is add all the keyboard layouts you’ll need…and some of those keyboards that you “need” are actually for languages you don’t even speak, but really you never know when the urge to learn it will hit you, so you’d like to be prepared.

19. When you discover, much to your delight, that your new dietary supplements are labeled not only in English but also in German and Spanish, at which point you eagerly begin to increase your vocabulary by learning new words through comparison of the texts.

20. When you answer calls from telemarketers using a language that you’re reasonably certain they won’t understand–so far this trick has always thrown them for a loop to the point where they hang up on me within 10 seconds 😀

21. When you just can’t understand how people make it to adulthood without knowing that they speak Portuguese in Brazil, not Spanish.

And finally, one that I have personally done:

22. Going to use or pick up an object around the house you try to think of the word for it in a language you’re learning. It’s on the tip of your tongue but you just can’t think of it for some reason. You should know this, you’ve learned it before. You will stand there, staring at the thing in question (refrigerator, car keys, milk, chair, whatever), refusing to allow yourself to pick it up or do whatever it is you were going to do with it until you can think of the correct word for it in the language that you’re trying to think in. You will stand there for however long this takes, perhaps finally giving in and going to look it up in the dictionary before coming back and proceeding as you were until it happens again :DI have stood in the shower staring at the soap, refusing to pick it up, getting angry at myself, while trying to think of the word for “soap” in Spanish for about 5 minutes before I finally gave up (I looked it up immediately after getting out of the shower, still wet, dripping water all over my bedroom floor as I went to fetch my Spanish dictionary).

Splish-splash, splish-splash…Cursing…

Papers rustling, flipping of pages…

“Jabón!!! I knew it! Damnit, why couldn’t I remember that?!”

Splish-splash, splish-splash back to the bathroom…

I hope you enjoyed all of those, to give credit where it’s due some of them came from or were inspired by a similar thread over at HTLAL where, if you really want to, you can read through (currently–it gets bigger every day) 136 pages of this stuff: You know you’re a language nerd when…

Edit: One more!

I just read Jennie’s post about how she has actually started to forget how to pronounce words in her own language, and thought “Damn, you know if that isn’t a sign that you are a serious, hard-core language nerd I don’t know what is!” Ha ha!

Below is me with all my Spanish-learning books (bookmarked and dog-eared to hell) and my precious Macbook and Sennheiser headphones…
I’ve been haphazardly teaching myself Spanish on and off for about the past 3 1/2 years, starting out with Pimsleur because I had used it before in high school to help me with French and I it them and knew it was well thought-of, I moved on to Rocket Spanish and then Platiquemos (basically a cleaned up version of the old FSI Spanish course) plus a bunch of workbooks from Amazon and any random videos, podcasts, or radio shows I could find online that would help me. I had a dictionary, a verb conjugation book, and a burning desire to learn Spanish.

I did not, regrettably, have much of a plan. I went at it hard at the beginning, spending 2 or 3 hours per day working on my Spanish, and I really think this gave me an excellent foundation to work with that I still benefit from to this day. I did that for about the first year or so and then let it drop off to about 30-45 minutes per day or so due to other commitments I was making and had more interest in at the time. I was able to maintain, for the most part, what I had previously achieved and was even able to continue to make gains, however slowly. In my opinion, 30 minutes per day is the absolute minimum you need to be able to make consistent gains in a language, and that really is a bare minimum–I would highly recommend you spend more time than that if it’s at all possible.

As I stated in my About Me page, I am intent on learning, as in becoming fluent in, lots of different languages (although I am mostly focused on Spanish right now), and what I’ve decided to do is put up a blog for each language as I learn it where I will document my progress and, most importantly and prominently, post anything and everything I find useful in teaching myself the language. I’ve set a time frame of 6 months from now (so the beginning of December of this year) for me to get fluent in Spanish, and I personally don’t think it will take that long, but we’ll see.

As mentioned before, up until now I’ve been going about this rather haphazardly without much of a system, but when I recently decided that I was going to do this, I came back to forum I had found before and sort of set aside until some time in the future when I would get really serious about this whole language-learning stuff (like…now!), called How to Learn Any Language. I’ve been lurking, reading, and even posting a bit in the past couple of weeks, but almost entirely reading. And…I’ve formulate a rough system to get me started based on Iversen’s excellent Guide to Learning Languages. It’s going to involve a much more structure-oriented global approach (as opposed to the traditional sequential approach most language teachers use, which is nothing short of horrible) with more emphasis on shoring up any weaknesses I have concerning Spanish grammar (I’ve learned most of it by this point, but I guarantee you I’m missing some stuff, some of it likely important), word lists, passive listening, intensive and extensive reading, and…something else. Something…not at all part of Iversen’s approach, something I’ve always believed to be extremely useful up until now (I used it for a short period of a few months about a year and a half ago) and which was confirmed for me by a certain Irish vegan and fellow language geek, Benny the Irish Polyglot (who is on the How to Speak Any Language forums under “irishpolyglot”, by the way):

YOU. MUST. SPEAK. THE. LANGUAGE. (this means with native speakers!!!)

How, you might ask? God bless the internet, that’s how. Do you have any idea how many of these damned language exchange sites there are out there which are specifically set up to pair up speakers of two different languages (where each one is learning the other’s language) so that they can practice with each other? I spent half an hour on Google the other day searching for them, going through the results, chucking out the crappy, unpopular, and useless looking ones and I came up with a quick list of TEN of them!

These things are awesome, I personally think that the ability to talk via Skype (which generally means you get audio AND video feed, in other words you’re essentially having a real-time video conference with the person where you can not only hear them but see them as well) for FREE with native speakers of whatever language you’re trying to learn (provided it’s not too obscure), anywhere in the world, for however long you can manage per day (because there are SO many people signed up on these sites between the lot of them) is absolutely going to cause the biggest change to language-learning, give it the biggest boost, that it has ever seen before throughout its entire history. This, of course, presumes you’ve got broadband, but that’s not really asking that much these days.

Combine that together, the ruthlessly efficient and effective method of understanding the language (because that’s what his method is really all about: truly understanding the language as a whole as soon as possible) of Iversen with Benny’s insistence upon the necessity to speak, speak, SPEAK (with native speakers, not to yourself, the mirror, or your dog) and I think we’ve got a real winner here.

I realize this is long on words and enthusiasm and short on details, but many, many, many updates, tips, tricks, and even more long-winded advice are to come, believe me. For now, I what you really need to do is go read Iversen’s guide to language-learning that I linked to above and maybe peruse Benny’s old posts, they’re both excellent and know what they’re talking about. Iversen’s guide will likely take you quite a while to get through (took me a few days) and you’ll also probably need to go back re-read it a few times to fully understand it, so you should be good for now 🙂
