It’s all about motivation (and having a great teacher, or not, makes HUGE difference, of course). If you’ve got the will, there is a way, no matter what.

I had no interest in learning French in high school, so I didn’t despite 4 years of classes.

I had no interest in learning Spanish in college (University), so I didn’t.

When I decided I wanted to learn Spanish, I did, and I learned quickly. Same thing with Japanese.

Our problem here in the U.S. is that we’re isolated, we’ve got Mexico next door but the great, great majority of Americans will never HAVE to interact with them (and even if they do, they’ll often speak English), Canadians speak English, and…that’s it. It’s not like Europe where you all are surrounded by people who all speak a different language. Plus, your educational system is better than ours, generally speaking.

And I can understand that most american lacks a goal. What the matter of learning a foreign language as everybody speaks english ? At school, I was very bad in language classes, because the teacher was not really motivating, but I didn’t see the interest for myself (I was a bit stupid and lazy ;-). But later, I found some interest to improve my bad english and learn spanish from scratch (I learned German for my second language). And it was easy, because the motivation was here…
